"Hands" was serviced to US radio in early Autumn 1998 and peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, the single did not receive a commercial release in the USA. The song regained popularity within the USA following the 9/11 terrorist attacks when a local disco jockey remixed the single to include soundbites of news snippets and interviews surrounding the terrorist attacks. It's important to note that the remix was not commissioned by Jewel's [then] label Atlantic Records, therefore an official release of the remix was never released.
"Hands" was the first single released by Jewel that did not include a re-working of the song's arrangement for radio release. Jewel's previous singles, "Who Will Save Your Soul", "You Were Meant For Me", "Morning Song", and "Foolish Games" all received significant reworking for radio release. Promotional CDS of, "Hands", contained an edited version reducing the length of the fade-out only by 10-seconds. The "radio edit" has never been released commercially for purchase. The following singles from, "Spirit", "Down So Long", "Jupiter (Swallow the Moon)", "What's Simple is True", and "Life Uncommon", all received a reworking in either arrangement or re-recording.
